The Prime Minister Julia Gillard and the Minister for Health Nicola Roxon today announced funding for the clinical training of up to 12,000 more medical, nursing and allied health professional students to help deliver better health care to Australians.

22 health and medical professions will benefit in remote, regional and metropolitan Australia including doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, dieticians, dentists and Aboriginal Health Workers.

Ms Roxon said $425 million had been allocated for the new training places over the next three years, of which $139 million would be delivered in 2011.

The training will occur across a variety of locations and professional settings as follows:
- 60% of the providers will be the non government and private sector;
- 41% of placement days will be in priority settings as such as aged care, dental, mental health, primary heath care and community based services; and
- 37% of the additional days will be in rural and remote areas.

The Australian Government's scheme will provide eligible working parents of babies born or adopted from 1 January next year with parental leave pay for up to 18 weeks at the minimum wage (currently $570 a week before tax).
The Australian Government's Paid Parental Leave scheme will help employers retain skilled staff and boost workforce participation.

To help women remain connected to their workplace when they take time off to have a baby, the Gillard Government's scheme ensures employers provide Government-funded parental leave payments to their long-term employees.

Parental Leave Pay should be delivered as a workplace entitlement, just like sick leave or any other form of leave.

The Australian Government today announced that it will fund the upgrade of the national emergency warning system, 'Emergency Alert', to deliver warnings to mobile phones based on the location of the handset.

Following the Interim Report of the Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission in August 2009, the Australian Government supported the Commission's recommendation to implement a national warning system based on the location, in addition to the billing address, of a mobile phone.
To achieve this, the Commonwealth provided $1.35 million to the Victorian Government to investigate the capability on behalf of all States and Territories.
This was part of the more than $26 million that has been provided by the Australian Government to establish a national telephone-based emergency warning capability, including $15 million for 'Emergency Alert'.
