Average temperature over an extended time period indicates very little
It shows what you may expect to happen only
I am sure if you look back there were very hot Decembers in the past
Easterly winds surely bring the heat but only for a short time
The change in wind direction to S/SW will cool you down
Same as in Melbourne
You need a strong northerly wind to get extreme heat and a southerly change can cool the temperature 20C in 60 minutes
