I love the saying 'faster than green grass through a goose' I've got to start using that!
I don't believe in the benevolence of any ASX director but as far as SWM is concerned the political objectives you speak of are much easier obtained by a media entity with financial clout and social reach than with a business languishing at 15 cents a share. Nothing I have seen about the business decisions taken by the SWM Board/Management indicate that they aren't taking decisive action to deliver value for all shareholders.
Some recent examples of this are
1. The Nightly - Widely criticised as merely a tool for Stokes to further his political clout despite the fact that this is one of the only media startups to become EBITDA positive in less than 1 year. https://www.mediaweek.com.au/seven-west-media-ceo-jeff-howard-explains-new-revenue-sources-digital-sport-impact/
2. At the SWM AGM Kerry Stokes specifically called out the government for a lack of policy allowing overseas streamers to 'eat our lunch' https://www.theaustralian.com.au/subscribe/news/1/?sourceCode=TAWEB_WRE170_a_GGL&dest=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theaustralian.com.au%2Fbusiness%2Fmedia%2Fgovernment-policy-failure-lets-overseas-streamers-eat-our-lunch-says-seven-west-media-chair-kerry-stokes%2Fnews-story%2F1de6b3971bc2977fe6a98edfe43883e3&memtype=anonymous&mode=premium&v21=ULTRALOW-Segment-1-SCORE&V21spcbehaviour=append
Within weeks of this speech by Kerry Stokes the Federal Government had publicly committed to rolling out the News Media Bargaining Incentive, passed into law the prominence regulations , waived the Commercial Broadcaster Tax for FY25 , provided over $116m in new public interest journalism grants and guaranteed a minimum commitment of $3m for regional newspaper advertising. https://hotcopper.com.au/threads/why-swm-is-worth-more-than-1-50-per-share.7836870/page-343?direction=previous
Rather than being disappointed in Kerry Stokes I am thankful that through my investment in SWM I am able to coat tail on the efforts of Kerry Stokes to drive a hard bargain and standup for the Free to Air TV Industry (even if as you say this is for political reasons).
I have no doubt that those shareholders who curse Kerry Stokes right now will be singing his praises when he signs the first dividend cheques for SWM before September 2025.
Completely agree with @Grajem12. SWM can and will recover before September 2025 just like it did during the Covid-19 Pandemic when it delivered >10x bagger returns. ALL shareholders should take a very keen interest in protecting SWM from any opportunistic takeover. To steal SWM while it trades at such a ridiculously cheap price would completely undermine the purpose of publicly listed shares. Thankfully >16% of SWM is held by Spheria Asset Management and Collins Street Asset Management who have both publicly stated that they understand the huge discount between SWMs current share price and its intrinsic value. (noting of course that SWM cant be compulsorily acquired without the bidder achieving >90% holding in SWM.)
