You've hit the nail on the head. AT current prices there are many viable alternatives to oil. The only thing delaying its replacement is the possibility that high prices may not last and the time it takes to roll out new technology. But if oil stays at these levels for too long and production looks unlikely to meet future demand - it will be replaced. It may happen gradually but we're not going to enter some sort of dark ages.
