And the other issue that comes with such a gift is the dreaded manipulation. We all have a friend from a European background that has in some point encountered the manipulation thrown on them by family after receiving gifts like cars, houses, cash etc.. Not exclusive to the Europeans obviously but I know at least a couple guys from Greek and Croatian heritage.
Whenever things in the family get rough, the parents are quick to point to the handout and play out the guilt trip.
