Younger generations use gigabit routers, once you buy one then there is a temptation to buy all gigabit equipment so you can change the MTU to 9000.
With a gigabit switch and mixed 10/100 and 10/100/1000 gear there is a need for MTU 1500 still on the subnet which limits transfers to about 200mbps-300mbps in the real world. Upgrading to all 1000 means you can uses 9000 (although the benefit stops after an MTU of just over 4000... the real world transfers can then get to 400-1000mbps (on your home network subnet).
Wireless won't disappear it will actually be more attractive to connect with 4G to you NBN home connection from your friends house or whatever. Real 4G is much better than 3G.
Current baby boomers don't care and the laptop users prefer wireless 3G now, even for home.
I don't think people realize how cheap it will look after the next results. I am just sad the price has fallen so much, now it will look like second risky price climb rather than the steady climb it deserved.
I suppose it does not help that the government is awarding most NBN contracts to overseas companies.
