This question raises various questions in itself but here's my thoughts. Im 26 and I grew up in what is probably the most affluent suburb, with a not so affluent family. I grew up as the only of my mates to not go to a private school, and am now the only one earning under 100k (about 60k for me), yet i am the one who worries least about money And i am 8 weeks away from my 2nd child while all other are single or have female "hangers on" (i refer to them that way as none that i have met of 90% of them have decent intentions for finding the love of their life).
50k would have to be a minimum these days to fund a mortgage, and as someone alluded to, it may just mean finding a house you can afford as opposed to the house you want. I still can manage to save for my future, and while i do plan on earning 200k a year one day from my investments, its not the end of the world if i dont... it just means i may have to work longer. But hey, i wont be the only one, right?
