Atheist has become a negative term, almost always translates as " AntiTheist". Really just means, "without[belief in]god". Similar word "asexual" , ie asexual reproduction, not "anti-sex", but not involving sex. Some people require evidence to produce belief, others arrive at their beliefs in other ways. Not believing in a supernatural being , doesn't mean you dont believe in anything, just not in a supernatural being.
And Claws, on someones deathbed, or in the trenches, I'm sure a belief in god is a useful antidote for fear. Good luck to them. A generally held belief doesn't make something true or not true however, whatever the circumstances. DYOR
