re: what is france up to? .... protecting iraqi oi Hi Yak,

This was why, last weekend, was arguing the proposition that france was up to something, and that it was after something (recognition, approval, support, etc) as it's price for supporting what was happening in the M-E.

Overall, have found it ironic that France has criticised the perceived militarism of the USA (cum UK), and yet has engaged in similar behaviour itself.

Similarly, by extending the hand of friendship to President Mugagbe, France was seeking to upstage the UK over resolving the dilemma of Zimbabwe. It was only when the EU (under pressure from the UK) finally said "no" earlier this week, that France backed off.

France is attempting to assert its pre-eminence over a region of potential influence (just as it is accusing the USA of in respect of the M-E). The reality, however, suggests that French and USA interests will eventually converge together and each will get what they desire. nthe process of doing so, however, both truth and morality will become casualties, particularly as France has now positioned itself to secure something of strategic value in Africa whilst the USA, the UN and the rest of the international community are otherwise engaged.

Morally bankrupt - hard to say.

Duplicitious in behaviour and approach - more likely.

Motivated, and acting out of self interest - without a doubt.

Playing a geo-political game of influence - yes.

Able to extract a concession out of the USA /UK - in due course, most likely.

    To be trusted - no.
