I agree there is a lot more fear about these days and people do not seem to care for each other as much as they did in the sixties.
I don't think there is anything special about 1972 unless you are referring to Whitlam. The change IMO is being driven by the illicit drug culture which took off in the seventies and the need addicts have for lots of money to feed their habit. Not the only reason of course.
