In the short term I find that technical analysis or as it commonly referred to as "charting" holds more sway than fundamental analysis (which holds more sway for the long term prospects of a company). TA helds you to determine "sharholder sentiment" which is the driver in any volatile market or so i'm told. The following is a good reference on TA:

TA is not the "be all & end all" but I find that it's a fair guide in stormy seas.
