Hi All,
My take on what the Archer CEO and presentations to date are talking about is that they have found the most logical way to commercialize the 12CQ. Addressing the most likely defence needs while also offering quantum encryption access to everyday consumers. They have developed specific lithography to embed quantum functionality into semi conductor chips.
Also, we cannot ignore that the investment community in the US, primarily institutions and VCs have been chasing the software end of tech. Looking for low cost, highly scalable ideas even when they don't prove useful. Vestiges of the 2000 tech bubble. This partly explains the lack of awareness of a hardware quantum semi conductor product. Hardware development is a lot more capital hungry at the start, needs to address a critical talent shortage , and there's widespread calls for government funding to step in.
Here in Australia and with AXE, we are in better shape to focus on the hardware and take it to a marketable product. AXE have developed their own critical engineering, research and development of applied materials and lithography. These used to be the preserve of a few in Silicon Valley and San Diego. The talent has gathered at Archer from all over the quantum information processing community and is working at pace. Funding also isn't an issue. Once it's time to produce at scale, things can get interesting. Unless the US fires up its semi conductor industry again on all cylinders, the only place where things can be made to happen quickly is in the defence space. Meanwhile, AXE has already shown collaboration with Europe has worked well but I wouldn't rule out Korea or Taiwan (if there's patent protection in Taiwan). A full scale semi conductor foundry is the only thing that is outside Archer's budget. They will look for a suitable partner and it could be from any part of the world, not the US specifically.
