As you may have gathered , I concur with your view totally.... ...." Archer’s is taking a multi-faceted approach which could see them end up anywhere."
AXE scientists always talk about materials at the nano and even down to the atomic scale. This is the scale they work at continuously. This involves graphene and other carbon nano structures and observing how they behave. Graphene based transistors are another holy grail that can replace silicon semiconductors because of the high conductance, low heat production and of course invisible to the naked eye scales. So it's a good bet that AXE R&D will find ways to exploit these properties to make the next generation of transistors. They're already doing this with the bio chip architecture. And I agree with Tizard that it looks like the bio chip might just make it ahead of the 12CQ in this 2 horse race.
Working at these scales also allows access to quantum effects and properties. For the 12CQ, It's a matter of embedding carbon nano material based spintronics into existing semiconductors and getting these spin qubits to entangle with one another while at the same time cutting down any other outside interference. Quite a task. The Archer website lists 4 positions all for the quantum department, all to do with nanofabrication and nano particle chemistry. Delays can also be because there is a talent crunch. This is why I say, the world and the markets (and even the academic world!) have to catch up with science research which is speeding ahead with the weird and wonderful discoveries that we have to figure out how to deploy at useful scales.
Catch up will happen. It's the when that we can't predict.
