Gadolinium is a contrast agent used in scans and imaging....(I will check with a radiologist soon). Apparently after being injected intravenously and MRI is done, it then passes out of the patient at some stage. There is therefore a need to detect these GD ions, if not safely metabolized into harmless stuff. Analytical devices to detect GD waste in hospitals and water treatment plants. Both the US FDA and the WHO have issued warnings to continually monitor this medical waste. This mention of carborane is most likely the use of graphene oxide as the electrochemical detector.
