    While we’re on the topic…
Hawke and Keating weren’t really to blame for the loss of Australian manufacturing jobs…they were just carrying on the dirty work done by Whitlam.
In 1975 Whitlam signed Australia on to the Lima Declaration. This basically meant that signatory countries would export their manufacturing industries to “Third World” countries in order to enrich them. The goods produced would go back to the signatory countries who had the “purchasing power” to buy them.
If there was ever a betrayal of the “Working Class” this was it. How ironic; that the political party that painted itself as the “Worker’s Party” (and still does!!) would end up destroying most Australian manufacturing. Australia has been reduced to relying on quarries, tourism and services.
I am old enough to remember it all playing out. Still think it’s BS? Look up “Lima Declaration”.
