The Collins dictionary defines religion as "a system of belief in,worship of a supernatural power or god".
The key words here are SUPERNATURAL POWER OR GOD. By worshipping a selected god, believers feel that they can ask for special favours and of course have a hot line to heaven.
As for the word BELIEF, anyone can believe in anything. You can believe it will rain tomorrow. Your friend can believe that the TV show they saw last night was the best ever. Another person can believe exactly the opposite - both are opinions.
Some posters constantly allege that atheism or evolutionism are religions. What is missing from both is the SUPERNATURAL POWER OR GOD component that is an essential part of the thousands of religions that have existed over the millenia.
