Mr Gordon.....your New World Translation is bogus! It is the only translation that translates John 1:1 that way or I suppose you consider every other translator in the world to be misguided...... "The Word (Christ) was God"
    ----------
Oilburner, That is just not true! There are translations that point out the difference that is glossed over by many translators. Should we be shocked when they have also chosen to expunge the Divine Name from their translations as well.
“The title ho theos [the God, or God], which now designates the Father as a personal reality, is not applied in the N[ew] T[estament] to Jesus Himself; Jesus is the Son of God (of ho theos). . . . Jn 1:1 should rigorously be translated ‘the word was with the God [=the Father], and the word was a divine being.’”—Dictionary of the Bible (1965), by John L. McKenzie, S.J.

Das Evangelium nach Johannes (1979) by Jürgen Becker reads: “ . . . und der Logos war bei dem Gott, und ein Gott war der Logos.” (English translation: “ . . . and the Logos was with the God, and a god the Logos was.”)

1808: “and the word was a god.” The New Testament, in an Improved Version, Upon the Basis of Archbishop Newcome’s New Translation: With a Corrected Text, London.
1864: “and a god was the Word.” The Emphatic Diaglott, by Benjamin Wilson, New York and London.
1935: “and the Word was divine.” The Bible—An American Translation, by J. M. P. Smith and E. J. Goodspeed, Chicago.
1935: “the Logos was divine.” A New Translation of the Bible, by James Moffatt, New York.
1975: “and a god (or, of a divine kind) was the Word.” Das Evangelium nach Johannes, by Siegfried Schulz, Göttingen, Germany.
1978: “and godlike sort was the Logos.” Das Evangelium nach Johannes, by Johannes Schneider, Berlin.
