Babies are shameless creatures, which is why everyone adores them. But they are only shameless because they haven't yet developed a sense of self.
The development of ego (self) at around age two is a normal part of development. Talk about a fall from grace! lol. As the self gradually becomes established, it can take on any number of different tones. Any negativity attached to the sense of self will cause problems. In fact all the psychopathologies that exist are tied in with negative self-image in some way. That's what shame is - negative self-image.
