    Police and fire crew attacked
    April 24, 2005
    From: AAP
ROWDY crowds have attacked police officers and firefighters in separate incidents on the New South Wales central coast, leaving several injured and angering emergency authorities.

Three police officers were injured while trying to break up a street brawl, and nine firefighters were attacked by drunks while battling a blaze.
Sergeant Kath Hawkins, from the Tuggerah Lakes Area Command, said police took exception when the safety of those trying to protect the community was threatened.

"When their safety is further put at risk when (they) are just doing their job in protecting and serving the community, then we do take a bit of an exception," she said.

"A heightened response is given to those instances as well."

In the incident involving police, officers were called to a fight which broke out at a party at Toukley, about 11pm (AEST) yesterday.

On arrival, they found more than 200 people in the street.

As police tried to arrest one of the group, four officers were allegedly punched and kicked repeatedly.

Back-up officers were called and helped disperse the crowd with capsicum spray after more than an hour at the scene.

A detective senior constable who received a cut to the scalp and a female constable who sustained a back injury were discharged after being treated at Wyong Hospital, Sgt Hawkins said.

Another male officer who was punched in the head was now "fine", she said.

A 20-year-old Buff Point man was charged with two counts of assaulting police and resisting arrest.

Police expect to lay further charges over the incident, as well as the separate assault on the firefighters.

Nine Rural Fire Service firefighters were attacked by a group of drunks while battling a blaze on a property in semi-rural Chain Valley Bay North about 11pm yesterday, police said.

Five firefighters were treated by ambulance crews, with one seeking further treatment for an eye injury, but they were not seriously hurt.

Police investigations into both outbreaks of violence continue.
