I am also a Commerce student, just finished my first year at UNSW.
I was drawn into the sharemarket when I was in Year 11 after reading RichDadPoorDad by Kiyosaki. I started with a few grand and thinking that it was easy, actually turned that into a few hundred bucks in a pump and dump before popping it back into the bank, the HSC got in the way after that but I kept reading investing and charting books.
After the HSC, I got back into shares and researched and bought a few speccies (some hotcopper faves, after DMOR of course!) which have done surprisingly well, so now I'm hooked.
Every cent of money I earn now goes into my portfolio which now consists of sizable holdings of mostly WHN/NEU and a few other speccies. I feel like I've done my research on these holdings and having got in at low prices and taken some profits, I am able to sleep tight and focus on my studies.
I haven't really tried daytrading or short term traded yet, as I am mostly out during the day in lectures and tutorials and feel my personality doesn't match it.
I'm sure the strategy of buying and holding specs is not recommended by more experienced investors, my lecturers and is extremely risky but I feel like if it doesn't work I've got a fair few years ahead, and better to fail earlier on.
