I posted this as a response to "Stark difference Libs and ALP - Thought it might be worthwhile posting under a header so i can get a few answers .
What i do know is acedemics appear to favor the left , the arts , a fair percentage of journo's , low paid workers and a large percentage of long term unemployed (my guesstimate only) . What I don't understand is why . Is it the "handout mentality " , jealousy/envy , hate of successful people or a belief or desire for some theoretical utopia where everyone is equal , what ?
Who really supports the left and what it stand for ? Do we really know what they stands for ? I don't . I suppose a true left is standing somewhere to the left of the socialist fence . A true left fanatic would of course be communist . Begs the question why ? Which countries under socialist/communist rule are successful . Russia , China , N Korea to name a few are hardly what you would consider a success . Low wages , human rights infringements by the shipload , no freedom of speech , people dissapear , population left out of the loop and lied to every day . The ruling class sip champagne , smoke cigars , squirrel citizens money into off shore accounts and give little or no consideration to the serfs .
Is this what the lefties here want , true socialism / communism ? I doubt it , methinks they still want to own their own house , their own car , go to the footy , play golf , send their kids to private school if they can manage it . Go on holidays , bet on the horses , go to restaraunts , fill the beer fridge up , buy books , videos , computer games and fill the shopping trolley up .
Somehow those things just don't happen under socialists . They happen under a free enterprise system , where the market regulates itself without Government interference . If Labor / Greens had their way industry here would be nationalised.......goodbye industry . Governments cannot make money , private industry does and while the true lefties are squawking about capitalists , the rich , the wealthy middle class and how much more tax they should be paying give them one minutes thought about where your money comes from ....it comes from them , small, medium , large business owners , not the Government .
So what is it lefties that so appeals about socialism ?
Churchills words sum it up best "socialism is the equal sharing of misery"
Some Lefties would like to see the equal sharing of assets (taxes etc) for nothing - that to me is communism and then there is nothing left , no entrepeners (no spell check ) , no small business , all that is left is Government .
So , what is appealing about the left - the great social reformers , who spend and spend until all that is left is massive debt with no plan or way of paying it back .
