We can all have an opinion on how tariffs might play out but what I am most confident about is that it won't make pharmaceuticals cheaper. What happened last time around (and I agree it did make generics cheaper) was the opposite of tariffs, the FDA fast tracked approval processes for new generics and that allowed 3 or 4 new foreign competitors for just about every generic and suddenly TEVA and other companies like it (including Mayne) couldn't compete on price (to be honest there was probably collusion on pricing before to keep generics higher) and most of those companies lost 80-90% in valuation. Interesting that over the same period companies that sold branded drugs (no competition) were not affected.
The other point I would add is that even if drug manufacturing in the US was to take up this additional volume, it would take years for new facilities to be built and for the FDA to approve them and that would also apply to APIs which are mostly made overseas.
If Trump wanted to make pharmaceuticals cheaper, the one thing he could do is eliminate the PBMs (pharmaceutical benefits managers) who are leeching out about 60% of the listed price of drugs. This is the very reason why MYX is seeking to disintermediate and bypass these leaches.
