Market cap in my opinion is in excess of $200m. Placing a value of $.610 per share. BHP is placing a write-off value on this mine at $410m - see BHP report and s&p. Regulatory financials only allow CZI to use 47% of that value less certain cost.
Why then did BHP sell this mine? I own plenty BHP shares (keep buying when it dips), also attended the last shareholders meeting. Marius Kloppers was there and I happened to have a 20min conversation with him. BHP is only focussing on 4 key areas for growth (see BHP BILLITON OPERATIONAL REVIEW FOR THE HALF YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2013). This specific mine sold to CZI does not fit their criteria (even though it is a healthy mine), basically giving it away but writing off over $410m on their books. Its better claiming a tax loss than selling it and paying 47.5% on that earning. BHP has already sold 3 other mines with similar tactics! THIS WAS A STEAL FOR CZI. RIGHT PLACE RIGHT TIME!
More upside to come!
Here is the snippet from the press release dated 1 April 2014: As we have said previously, the simplification of our portfolio is a priority and is something we have pursued for several years. In the last two years alone, the Group has announced or completed divestments in Australia, the United States, Canada, South Africa and the United Kingdom, including petroleum, copper, coal, mineral sands, uranium and diamonds assets. We believe that a portfolio focused on our major iron ore, copper, coal and petroleum assets would retain the benefits of diversification, generate stronger growth in free cash flow and a superior return on investment. By increasing our focus on these four pillars, with potash as a potential fifth, we will be able to more quickly improve the productivity and performance of our largest businesses. We continue to actively study the next phase of simplification, including structural options, but will only pursue options that maximise value for BHP Billiton shareholders. Any course of action remains subject to detailed review and an assessment of alternatives.
Disclosure: I just bought $30,000 worth of shares. I expect to buy more. I dont mean to influence anybody.
Happy investing. Cheers
