Japan joining the axis in WW2..........Japans' interest in colonial SE Asia would have come about in time anyway.The colonial powers in SE Asia at the time were hardly there for the locals interest and benefit.That is the problem,the physical presence of 'foreigners' in far flung places together with military backup.Can only be for one reason...rape and pillage of the country.Same problem now;perhaps a little less visible presence would give good results over time.Time is the problem these days....everyone wants big profits yesterday...read Stockdoctors posts!
