BC Iron inks agreement with Fortescue

Iron ore explorer BC Iron Ltd has signed an infrastructure sharing agreement which could see the company gain access to Fortescue Metals Group Ltd's rail and port facilities.

The non-binding memorandum of understanding allows for BC Iron to negotiate the use of Fortescue's raul haulage, port and shiploading facilities on commercial terms to transport its ore.

BC Iron's Nullagine project, which is still in the exploration phase, is located north-east of Fortescue's Cloud Break deposit and close to its rail line.

The agreement is the second for Fortescue, which reached a similar infrastructure sharing agreement with iron ore hopeful Atlas Iron Ltd last month.

AdvertisementIT SEEMS BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto will stop at nothing to maintain their duopoly over the Pilbara iron ore industry - even if that means doing deals with tiny explorers to lock up deposits in the region.

But last week was also a busy week for both mining giants.

On Wednesday Cazaly Resources revealed it was negotiating a memorandum of understanding that would give BHP the rights to buy iron ore from the explorer's Shovelanna deposit, which is near BHP's Orebody 18 mine.

Not one to be overshadowed by the big global miner, Rio Tinto announced on Friday it had signed a letter of intent to develop the Nameless Prospect of West Australian exploration hopeful AusQuest.
