Monash IVF flags further cost cutting despite doctor backlash

Monash IVF chief James Thiedeman has flagged plans to further cut costs and improve revenues by changing laboratory procedures and its workforce, ahead of Monday's meeting of one-third of the group's doctors who are concerned about patient care.
Monash on Friday reported an annual normalised profit of $23.3 million, missing prospectus forecasts, which the company attributed to lower than expected industry growth. Mr Thiedeman declined to give guidance for 2016 but said the first two months of this year had been better than the second half of 2015.

He told analysts the appointment of Dr Michelle Lane as chief operating officer would ensure margins were maintained even if the assisted reproductive market failed to normalise as the company predicts it will.
The resignation of two senior embryologists was one of the triggers for 29 doctors to write to the board, claiming "something is fundamentally wrong" at the group. The doctors will meet in Melbourne on Monday, and are planning to ask for a hiring freeze and a greater role in vetting policies that would affect patients and doctors.
Mr Thiedeman confirmed that allegations had been made that pregnancy success rates were being manipulated in some parts of the group but said "the allegations were incorrect".

Mr Thiedeman said he expected to meet the 29 doctors who wrote to the board within the fortnight.
