you would be right with your logic for most other companies however in this case AF is using those words to just buy him more time until he finally caved in (much wealthier in the process) and then finally tells shareholders that the economic environment has now changed and that it was tougher to compete in the marketplace with other more established players in the space (ones that shareholders should have invested in)
