Yes DB in the last three years almost every oil Company has had a poor return, does that make them a poor investment...only if you had bought three years ago and need to sell now....

Many oil Companies have been around longer than most punters , have gone through several cycles and are still considerably bigger now than when they made their first discovery...

Its all about timing and expectations, if your timing is out it then becomes all about waiting and comes with no guarantee that waiting will achieve your expectations...

Generally speaking investment is a longterm project with retirement in mind, punting/trading is more to do with play money or as a source of income ,so need to be treated differently IMO ...

Many have long term investments and trading accounts which probably makes for a good hybrid approach.
