Its actually LinkedIn that cant compete with 1PG as their profile database is based on a professional connection graph as opposed to a social one. This is often people you either have a shallow networking connection with or brief work history, how would you feel referring someone you dont know that well?

1-Page is much smaller and therefore much more nimble and better placed to adapt and innovate their products to what the markets want much more quickly, as their recent activity has shown.

LinkedIn is not the incumbent in a lot of organisations therefore there may not be any competitive issue at all.

Time will tell who has the better product and if they actually directly compete with each other. But im pretty sure right now 1PG will focusing on refining their own products rather than worrying about competing with the big boy LinkedIn.
