Reference the comments [from Toyota] that induction motors[which do not require permanent magnets] may be developed to sidestep the shortage of rare earths.
The curent situation is that induction motors are not that efficient and are larger than the current motors. These appear fatal problems for such a motor running off batteries in a motor vehicle.
Toyota would need a high magnitude technological advance to achieve this concept.
