US coal assets will not come cheap. Its too late for that. And the Yanks are happy to skin any unsuspecting foreign interests that put a foot wrong. The ASX is littered with Gas plays and even the odd Coal story gone wrong. I'll be happy if they do some very long (and cheap) due dilligence here

Colombia; it seems the target is for something around 250,000 tonnes per year ("smaller Family run operations"). In the coking coal industry one could assume about a $100 per tonne margin as a reasonable starting point. So $25m Gross to the Ledger, Bathurst picked up something like this in NZ; in its Casacde purchase from Eastern for about $30m.

Assuming a Colombian purchase (with some sought of Family interest to be retained)is an already operating venture and Sovereign risk at levels a little higher than NZ. Coal quality a little south of the Deniston plateau product, I think a Colombian purchase whould be somewhere in the $15 to $35mill. Of course bigger resource (althoug a family run operation will not be heavily JORC'd), higher quality etc etc bigger price tag. And many reasons for a lower price tag.

Give me Colombia over the US
