There is an old saying that the more apocalyptic gold bugs should remember:
"Be careful what you wish for. You might get it!"
Reading their posts gives me the impression that owning gold will provide some protection from the chaos that would follow a global banking collapse. This is delusional! It assumes that complex commerce is sustainable without a banking system.
To borrow from Thomas Hobbes, life after such a collapse is likely to be "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short".
Your reference to McCarthy's novel is entirely relevant.
