The latest Metcash shorts as of 23/06/15 are said to have increased from 17.9% to 19.75%which is an increase of 16,918,451 shares. Yet the ASX total turnover for Metcash on that day was only 8,483,082 shares. Chi X doesn't seem to have historical turnovers on its site for all shares but it does show the largest 35 turnovers for each day and Metcash was not one of them so the turnover on Chi X would have been less than 4m shares making the total daily turnover less than 12.5m shares. So how did the shorts increase in volume by more than the daily turnover?
Also the gross daily shorts on that day were reported as being only 1,243,498 shares. I was certainly expecting the short total to continue falling on these published figures.
Are we being deceived by the shorters?
Wouldn't you expect ASIC to query figures like these rather than just publish them.
