I like your comparison with online vs. physical store, I totally agree - physical store for a high investment decision like a couch will always be there.

When you move, often you upgrade into a bigger place.
I.e. maybe a family, or you might be going from a city apartment to a house. You then often buy a new couch as old one doesn't fit right, isn't the right colour etc.

Right now, what is happening is a collapse in people moving (20% decrease year on year).
Why is that? Many factors - reduced supply, cost of living, collapse in fertility so couples aren't moving onto the next logical step.

There is migration happening, no doubt about it. But unfortunately, this temporary move in nature, won't result in higher couch sales as much as 2sigma wants as more people are also dying and less babies being born.
