cost base is more important to me as there will always be demand for gold - the question is at what cost can you deliver and what is your margin
Check out NST presso at Denver - only reason I mention them is that MD makes it abundantly clear that by changing from contractors and hired equipment to company employed labour force and own equipment brought overall cost base down by quite a nice chunk (also giving them more flexibility on how these can be deployed).
