During her time in Gaza, there were times Dr Othman said she had to perform abdominal surgery on children in the dark, and days she and other surgeons worked up to 20 hours.

They treated patients on mattresses, and in hallways, with no patient privacy.

On other days she lost patients — many were children.

She said the medical staff did all they could to treat "burst abdomens" caused by poor post-operative care but were hampered by the lack of medical supplies.

Dr Othman said morphine was almost "non-existent" so some patients would awake from major surgeries screaming in pain, without relief.

Staff and the hospital system were overwhelmed.

Dr Othman said she treated young children who were already "psychologically" damaged.

"The healthcare system is hanging on by a thread," Dr Othamn said.

"You spend hours in the emergency department with the lights, the electricity turning off, no fans, no air conditioning."

"People are on the floor, surrounded by blood, and you're sweating, trying to be able to kneel down and provide care for them."

She said the al-Aqsa hospital, one of the few remaining major hospitals, was "barely functioning".

The hospitals heavily relied on medical aid, and generators to keep running.

In many cases, patients have had little to no pain relief, she said.

    ABC of course.

just let your mind rest on the image. look around the pic, a clean ward area even though its an awning leanto.
