The pattern i see is that there is a certain amount of shorts that happen every day no matter what happens, probably day-traders. So on low volumes days there is a bigger 'Shorts as % of volume'.

The more medium term shorters (who might short for weeks), are the ones who influence the share price, they are better reflected in the graph (net shorts), buy unfortunately it has a 4 day delay.

As shorter % increases it increases buying pressure, as one day shorters will have to buy shares to unwind their position.
On Sept 22 (recent shorter low) there was 3.83% of shares shorted and the share price was $6.26, now there 6.67% of shares shorted, thats 17.7M extra shares. They are winning at the moment, but if the share price gets to $6.26 then they will be losing, so if the share price starts rising and looking like it will get to $6.26, they will close out there position. So that 17.7M shares is probably around 3 to 5 days of trade alone, that extra buying pressure will make the share price rise faster.
