Timber is prone to termites which is why railway sleepers are dipped in all kinds of nasty chemicals to stop wood rot and stop letting "termites do what termites do best". An environmental report was completed by Alinta and provided to the SA EPA to demonstrate that residual chemicals on the sleepers posed no unacceptable risk to the receiving environment - thought I'd include this before anyone jumped on the site contamination bandwagon
