Big tech companies emphasise ecosystems because it gives them scale. It generally doesn't make sense to divert resources and focus to combat every other business that pops up. You either bring them into your partner ecosystem and work together, or buy them out.

Having an ecosystem is a signal of strength. A software platform with no third party devs has limited innovation and flexibility outside its core functionality.
