The split in shares 3:1 was to increase liquidity in the stock. People have a mental barrier when share prices go through the roof and companies such as FMG (6:1) did the same for much the same reasons.
They went throught a delayed settlement (+12 days from memory)phase where you could actually buy the interim delayed settled shares; at the time this encouraged a lot of people to day-trade the stock as the T+3 was not operative.
