Drought putting strain on Hydro Tasmania supplies
Wednesday, January 10, 2007. 5:00pm (AEDT)
Hydro Tasmania is hoping for more rain as water storage levels fall to less than 30 per cent full.
The state has been relying on Basslink to ease the pressure on its dams, importing more than 800 gigawatt hours of power from other states in the past four months.
Hydro Tasmania's Michael Connarty says last weekend's rain did little to top up storages because the past 12 months have been so dry.
"We estimate it's probably the driest we've had since about 1967 so and that was a pretty phenomenal year with regard to our situation in Tasmania," he said.
"So it has been very dry this year and that's on the back of fairly dry last 10 years as well."
