NCM made an expensive takeover of Lihir. Nobody else wanted it.

Their will be legacy issues as Lihir was very much a dog with fleas. NCM management was always touted as the better managers than their counterparts but then the NCM management had Tier 1 assets in politically stable countries. Lihir management besides buying the old dog every now and then also had to deal with constant problems with their main asset in PNG.
