The Smithsonian link you posted describes fragments of fossils of Homo sapiens from as far back as 300,000 years in Africa.
The conclusions from the article seems to suggest different Homo sapien populations occurred around Africa and later mixed to create the modern human.
A lot of the conclusions are based on genetic evidence that is extrapolated back in time along with small amounts of fossils.
But as you say clear evidence isn't as yet available.
