I'm not up with the inner workings of the various shorting strategies, so you'll have to excuse my ignorance too!
I have noticed that prior to a company's sudden drop in the S/P there often comes large reported numbers of registered short shares, you'll notice a reasonably large increase. I can only assume that the shares are purchased to lend to the shorters by the lending entity. This doesn't happen 100% of the time, but often enough to raise a red flag for me.
