What BHP has announced is that "Whitehaven Coal has been selected as the preferred bidder in the
divestment process." Which I take to mean that due to the risk of WHC not being able to complete due to activist shareholders then we might have to engage with "less" preferred bidders.
That said, suspect that the WHC deal will be executed. A large portion of the non-activist shareholders are probably pretty relaxed about an acquisition of more coal assets (particularly at a good price). Which means SMR is not really in the game.
