In my limited knowledge of how the stock market works, IMO you could not possibly be taught how to make money from the stock market in unversity because the market is constantly evolving and changing at a far too rapid pace.
You also cant teach a person psychological aspects of trading. So while I think having an acedmic background in economics etc would give you a broad understanding of how the economy and the markets work, it is but the tip of the ice berg when it comes to actually pulling money out of the market. There really is no substitute for experience. Jesse Livermore is proof of that.
