I had a similar experience with a free consultation from one of the big 4 banks immediately before the GFC. I had been selling down my holding and so had a healthy cash balance which, presumably was how I came onto their radar. The guy I saw had very little experience (from what I could perceive) and his advice was to leverage my share portfolio. It made no sense at all as I was flush with cash as I couldn't find shares worth investing in. My own financial adviser who manages my super, is much better at what he does and I value his opinion. Especially when it comes to superannuation (and to some extent tax planning) which I cannot be bothered keeping up to date on. Even so, I keep a large amount of my portfolio outside of super and spread around the place (eggs and baskets), so that if one goes south I still have other forms of security. There are always plenty of stories of folks whose FA has run off with all their funds or otherwise managed to lose their money for them.
