Depends how you go about it. I have a long position and a trading parcel, best of both worlds. I've made 8 buy/sell trades so far this calendar year with trading parcel, and so far, I have outperformed the actual share price performance, net of tax.
Short term trading can go against you from a timing perspective, so it's important to set aside cash to pay tax from trading activity, per trade as you go, plus some more, just in case.
