    Hi CC, I've only just seen this thread and apologise else I would have responded earlier.

    Your new medical team did exactly as I would have hoped. Giving IV antibiotics is hardly extreme measures medically speaking. It becomes more serious if he needs to be placed on a ventilator for respiratory support which is often required as pneumonia becomes a more serious problem. As the infection spreads, potentially, the other bodily systems, kidneys, liver can start to shut down. That's when the life and death decisions need to be taken not at the stage your relative was at.

    I've been on a ventilator twice with pneumonia and I'm still here to annoy posters on HC!!
