    Hi Cowcockie,

I'm truly sorry to read of your problem.

    FWIW -

    * Antibiotics are normally effective against bacterial infections. There are a few which will help with some viral infections, but none that act on cancers/tumours.

The aspiration pneumonia caused by inhaling vomit is a physical inflammation of the lung reacting to foreign matter. There obviously is a concurrent risk of bacterial infection as a result of the inhaled matter, and the antibiotics will be to prevent this occurring.

    * An Advance Health Directive is just that.

It sets out the writer's directions on what SHOULD NOT be done if he/she is in such a position of being able to clearly and lucidly verbalise his/her wishes. It takes all responsibility away from family members (like yourself) and the doctors treating. (The AHD form is a formal document recognised by law. It is available for purchase from any Post Office - I'm in the process of completing one for myself.)

If your father hasn't actually written down his wishes, he has at least conveyed them to you. My own thought is that his wishes should be honoured.

Supportive care, palliative care seems the way to go to me.

I believe it's the quality of life that's important, not the quantity of it.

All the best to you and to your father's family.

    sincerely
